Despite what you may have heard, the day after Thanksgiving is not usually the biggest shopping day of the year.

Instead, it's often the last Saturday or Sunday before Christmas, which means stores will be packed this weekend.

Last year, the final weekend before Christmas accounted for nearly 12% of all holiday sales.

But the bad economy and a shorter season this year means many shoppers have been holding back, and stores are expected to slash prices.

"All of our stores are prepared with tremendous sales. We have many stores with percentages up to 80% off and we have several bargains," said Dee Ann Nesbit with the Tanger Outlet Center.

A study by the National Retail Federation showed that only 8% of shoppers have completed their Christmas shopping.

The study showed many shoppers have been waiting for discounts.
