Horry County's election commission met Thursday morning to certify the results of Tuesday's election for Atlantic Beach mayor. Officials reviewed 15 challenged ballots, and decided that only eight would be counted.

Before the hearing, 71 votes were in, with Retha Pierce getting 35 votes and write-in candidate Charlene Taylor getting 22 votes.

After the eight challenged ballots were counted, Pierce ended up with 37 of the 79 total votes. Charlene Taylor ended up with 25 votes. While Pierce has more votes than Taylor, she needed at least 40 to have a majority. Since she failed to get a majority, a runoff election will be held.

The runoff, which will only include Pierce and Taylor on the ballot, will be held on December 16th.
