Tourism drives the Myrtle Beach economy, but for Grand Strand retailers, business from local residents is more important than ever. It's why the Chamber of Commerce is trying something new this holiday season.
It's called "Shop the Grand Strand" and many local retailers have already signed on, including at least 8 stores at Coastal Grand Mall.
The stores are offering discounts specifically targeting local residents, stores like Canipe's Chocolates and Candies.
Business has been slow this fall at Canipe's, said owner, Todd Canipe. "We don't have as many people in town tourist-wise."
It's one reason why Canipe's is joining the Chamber of Commerce's "Shop the Grand Strand" campaign, offering discounts and deals to locals.
Canipe says his business will always rely at least in part on tourists, but he wants local residents to have a good feeling about the store, too. "The more locals you can get, that's steady year-round business and you really appreciate it when they come and shop with you," said Canipe.
The chamber has done "shop local" campaigns before, but always tied to special events or festivals.
This year, with the economy in a recession, chamber leaders decided to try it for the first time during the Christmas season.
"We've heard from our members, business is slower and we know that the consumers that are out there, they're also looking for deals, they need to get their money to go a little bit further, so we're hoping it's a win-win for both," said Diana Greene with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.
Coupons will be available at any chamber welcome center or they can be printed out from the chamber's web site, for discounts on everything from fudge to wireless phones.
The deals are aimed at locals, but visitors can also use the coupons. "As long as your money's green, we're fine with that, yes," said Greene.
Nearly 60 businesses have signed up for the campaign and chamber leaders hope a few more will join in.
The chamber plans to promote the campaign heavily on local radio and TV closer to Christmas.
Coupons for the "Shop the Grand Strand" campaign will be available starting next Monday.
