Ninety Grand Strand and Pee Dee World War Two veterans will take a free trip today to our nation's capitol.

It's through a program called Honor Flight. The organization makes it possible for World War II veterans to see the memorial built to honor their service.

The National World War II Memorial was opened to the public in 2004.

It's estimated that each day, nearly 1,000 World War II veterans pass on, many without ever having been to Washington to see the memorial. Honor Flight's goal is to help every single veteran in America, willing and able of getting on a plane or a bus, visit their memorial. Top priority is given to senior or terminally ill veterans.

The amazing thing about Honor Flight is that these veterans get to fly for free. The flights, though, come at a cost... about $60,000 per flight. Each flight carries roughly 90 veterans, 54 guardians, and necessary medical personnel.

Update as of 10:15am: The veterans have landed in Washington DC and we will continue to keep you updated throughout the day.

Update as of 2:15pm: When the veterans arrived at the memorial they were greeted by Bob Dole and are now touring the memorial. Ed Piotrowski sent us some video of the memorial.

Update as of 9pm: The veterans landed at Myrtle Beach International Airport around 8pm to a huge welcome home celebration.
