The Marion Street Fire Station is now named in memory of James Daniels, Lawrence Hawkins, Hosea Quillens, Norman Sanders, Cornelius Sims and Louis Small, the city's first African-American firemen.
A sign bearing their names hangs outside the fire house.
The men were hired in 1953 to work at the North Florence fire station.
Major Stephen Wukela calls the six firemen trail blazers.
"I think it was long overdue. I think the city recognized it was long overdue that these men be recognized. And it is all together appropriate that people come together and remember these men who meant so much to the community," Wukela said.
Some of the firemen worked more than 30 years for the city.
