SC education panel offers education goals report

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The Education Oversight Committee on Monday is releasing numbers gauging reading proficiency, graduation rates, workforce readiness, and the number of "at risk" schools.

EOC Chairman Neil Robinson is discussing the report. Herb Johnson of Michelin North America is also talking about the importance of educated workers to global companies.

The nonpartisan EOC was created by the state's 1998 education accountability law and consists of 18 business, legislative and education leaders. They are responsible for evaluating the state's progress toward meeting education goals and issuing state report cards for schools and districts.

It reset those goals in 2009 after legislators revamped the state's end-of-school-year tests.
