(AP) -- The Senate is debating whether to allow early voting in South Carolina.

The Senate began debating Thursday a measure allowing voters to cast ballots beginning 10 days before the election up through the Saturday before Election Day. There would be no Sunday voting.

South Carolina allows people to vote absentee in person up to a month before an election if they give an excuse why they cannot go to the polls Election Day. That includes being at work or on vacation.

The debate has been sidetracked by amendments that were ruled improper. One would have required people to include their birthplace on voter registration forms.

Travelers Rest Sen. Tom Corbin says he wants to ensure non-citizens cannot vote. But even his fellow Republicans said his amendment would not accomplish that.
