(AP) -- COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina legislators will consider adding a Medicaid expansion plan by House Democrats into the state budget.

Floor debate on the Ways and Means Committee's $6 billion plan for state taxes resumes Tuesday. The 2013-14 proposed budget totals almost $23 billion when including federal money, agency fees and grants.

Democrats have prepared amendments to extend Medicaid eligibility to more poor adults while the federal government promises to cover the costs. The federal health care law calls for states to begin sharing the cost after three years.

Democrats say officials can evaluate later whether to continue coverage as the state match grows to 10 percent.

Republicans argue it would be politically impossible to toss people off rolls once they're enrolled.
