More than 500 drivers lined up to try to get free gas in Florence Tuesday morning.

Florence police said only 100 drivers got free gas at the Breakers Food Mart at 2074 West Evans St.

Several credit unions from around the Pee Dee region joined together to offer free gasoline beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Only the first 100 vehicles in line received $20 in regular gas, courtesy of the Credit Unions of South Carolina.

The offer of free gas kicks off the second year of an ongoing campaign, referred to as MADTAG, by the Credit Unions of South Carolina to highlight the good deeds being done in our local community, and those who are making a difference.

"MADTAG is all about finding ways to make a difference in the lives of others and our community" said Will Crosswell, Business Development Director at Palmetto First Federal Credit Union in Florence. "But we don't want it to stop there, just like a game of tag, we want people to pass on the good deed to someone else" said Crosswell. "Instead of just asking people what good deeds have been done for them, we wanted to lead by example by surprising drivers with free gas," said Linda Weatherford, Director of Marketing for SPC Credit Union also with offices based in Florence. "Hopefully the drivers who are the recipients of our good deed will be energized to find a way to pass it on" Weatherford said.

The Credit Unions of South Carolina have launched a Facebook page, encouraging people to submit examples of good deeds that have been done for them, and who is responsible for them.
