Florence County Council has started measures to possibly extend a penny sales tax that voters approved in a referendum in 2006.
The tax went into effect in 2007 and funded six major road widening projects.
It's generated more than $150 million with an additional $90 million secured by Florence County Senator Hugh Leatherman from the South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank.
It ends in April of 2014.
Florence County Council Chairman James Schofield says council members are looking at extending it by another seven years to fund other capital projects.
Schofield says some of the suggestions include a new EMS Station, road improvements and renovation of the Florence City County Complex once the city vacates the building in July.
County council has appointed a six member commission to come up with a list of projects to be funded.
The commission will meet later this month.
They will get a lot of input from residents as to what they would like to see done in the county.
"This is chance for the public to say now we want something else. We want more roads all roads . No we want a soccer complex or we want whatever," said James Schofield.
Council will approve the project list and will vote if a referendum will be held on the extension of the tax.
The referendum could take place in the spring of 2014.
