Horry County police are warning that a scam targeting elderly people in our area about two years ago, is being used again.

The scammer will call an elderly person in the middle of the night and say "Grandma?" or "Grandpa?" depending on who answers. The scammer will pretend to be a grandchild of the elderly person and say that they are out of the country and have been arrested.

The scammer will ask that money be wired to them for an attorney who can get them out of the charges.

A second scammer then gets on the line, pretends to be the attorney, and gives the wire information.

In many cases, the elderly person wires the money before realizing it was not their grandchild who placed the call.

If you receive a phone call similar to this, you are encouraged to call your local law enforcement agency.
