(AP) -- Sign companies now have permission to put up digital billboards around Florence County, although a new county ordinance governs their use.

The Florence Morning News reports that, under the new rules, there must be at least a one second interval between messages on the signs. The messages cannot flash and the messages must remain unchanged for at least six seconds.

The signs also must have light-sensing devices that will reduce the brightness of the sign as weather conditions change. The signs must be dimmer after dark.

The newspaper reports that there are more than 1,100 billboards in the Pee Dee region of the state. About 100 are digital billboards.
