A woman is dead after a single car crash in Marion County after the driver says he fell asleep at the wheel.

Bambi Whicker, 36, and her husband left their home in Winston Salem, North Carolina early Sunday morning, according to Marion County Coroner Jerry Richardson.

They were driving on 501 bypass near Bluff Road when Whicker's husband said he fell asleep while driving around 5:15 a.m, said Richardson.

He ran the car off the road, overcorrected, it flipped over, and the victim was thrown from the car, according to the Highway Patrol.

They were both taken to Carolinas Hospital in Marion, said Richardson.

Whicker was pronounced dead at the hospital, her husband survived, said Richardson. He was not seriously injured.
