More than 60 soldiers, that include Chinook helicopter pilots, departed from South Carolina as they headed to Afghanistan Saturday.

The South Carolina National Guard Company B, 2-238 Aviation left McEntire Joint National Guard Base in Eastover, South Carolina around 8:30 a.m., according to a press release.

This unit is designed to help operate at higher altitudes and carry higher gross weights than other helicopters, said the press release.

The unit will first travel to Texas for a mobilization period before going to Afghanistan.

The deployment is scheduled for one year.
