CONWAY, S.C. (WPDE) - Coastal Carolina University kicked off its Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration Thursday night at Wheelwright Auditorium.

CCU's Office of Multicultural Student Services held the event to promote unity and diversity.

Alonzo Jones, Associate Dean of Students at Arizona State University, served as the featured speaker.

He talked about the legacy of Dr. King and the impact he had on the civil rights movement.

Jones explained why it's important we continue to celebrate his legacy today. "He stands as the face of America coming to terms at least legally with what it means to be American, what it means to be a citizen in a very diverse type of America."

Jones also told the crowd it's important to not make our heroes untouchable, because that leads to the belief that we cannot achieve what they did.

"When I talk with people, I challenge them not to just instantly put role models, or elderly people, or entertainment people into these categories, because in doing so I think we narrow them," he added.

CCU will continue to celebrate African American culture next month.
