(AP) -- A Chapin High teacher who talked glowingly about the United States and the importance of embracing freedom while stomping on an American flag in his classroom may soon find out if he loses his job.

Lexington-Richland District 5's school board is expected to consider the superintendent's recommendation to fire Scott Compton at a closed door meeting Monday evening.

A spokesman for the district says Superintendent Stephen Hefner was appalled with the bad judgment in defacing a U.S. flag to make a point.

Compton and his lawyer did not respond to messages from The Associated Press.

But attorney Darryl Small told WIS-TV that Compton meant no intentional disrespect and was only trying to show that what America stands for is greater than the material objects like the flag that represent it.
