Florence leaders hope housing will lead to revitalization

Florence County and city leaders hope a new housing project will revitalize the north Florence area.

They held an open house Wednesday at McGowan Commons, a 36 unit townhouse-style apartment complex off Oakland Avenue.

The housing authority worked on the project for two years, and got state tax credits to help pay for it.

"It's that commitment to infrastructure that we're bringing back to the north side of town," said Florence Mayor Stephen Wukela said. "That has to do with roads and affordable housing."

The new apartments are the beginning of a four-phase project.

The housing authority plans to build at least two more housing units to accommodate families and seniors.

It also hopes to build houses to start a home ownership program.
