MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) - The Christmas season is here for The Salvation Army and they're hoping those who can afford to donate, will.

Friday night, the organization kicked off their Angel Tree and Red Kettle programs at Coastal Grand Mall in Myrtle Beach.

Across Horry County there are 19 Angel Trees set up at different businesses. On each one hangs a tag with three toy wishes and a shoe size for a needy child in the area. Those who want to participate can "adopt" an angel by buying what's on their Christmas wish list.

Last year they helped about 1,200 kids. The program is successful because of community support.

"The Salvation Army's mission is to help people and to meet human needs without discrimination. So we do this every year because we know that there is poverty out there, there is the working poor. There are children out there that would not have Christmas if we were not able to help them," explained Brenda Ryan with The Salvation Army of Horry County.

Ryan says they hope to raise $155,000 this year with the Red Kettle program.

If you'd like to donate toys or participate in the Angel Tree program contact The Salvation Army at (843) 488-2769.
