After four hours of deliberation, the trial of Wilhelmena Washington ended in a hung jury Thursday, according to Washington's attorney.

That means jurors deadlocked and couldn't reach a verdict.

She was on trial this week for two counts of forgery and two counts of misconduct in office.

The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) arrested her last November.

At the time, Washington was the Clerk of Court for the Town of Timmonsville. She was fired from that position in May.

State police say she forged Judge Lloyd Wilcox's signature to commitment and release paperwork for the Florence County Detention Center on inmate Willie Lee Robinson, Jr.

Washington's attorney Patrick McLaughlin says she has signed the judge's signature at least 70 other times and he has the documents to prove it.

He says Washington was under the impression that she was allowed to sign such paperwork.

It's up to the state attorney general's office, which prosecuted the case, to decide if she'll be retried and when.
