Highway Patrol concluded a man suffered a medical condition and blacked out when he ran his car across two medians and three lanes of traffic, killing a Surfside Beach woman.

Cynthia Ayala died from mass trauma to vital organs, according to Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler.

Derek Fiore, 34, from Rutherford, New Jersey, was traveling north on a frontage road that runs parallel to Highway 17 in front of Old Time Pottery on July 12, according to Highway Patrol.

He passed out, crossed the median onto Highway 17 Business, crossed another median and slammed into five other cars, which were stopped for a light.

Ayala was in one of the cars sitting at the light.
