COLUMBIA (WACH) -- As the cleanup continues in the Northeast after the one-two punch of Hurricane Sandy and the nor’easter that followed, a group of concerned citizens in Columbia is coming together to help.

The Columbia Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort is collecting items like batteries, blankets, paper towels, diapers, garbage bags, shovels, brooms and more.

Organizers are filling a U-Haul truck with donations and will drive them up to New Jersey on Friday to deliver the supplies.

Organizer John Adams says he was inspired to help because he has family members in the affected areas.

“This last day has been overwhelming. We’ve collected a lot more items than we thought we would so quickly, which is a great problem to have.”

The U-Haul is parked outside the Turning Pointe on Forest Drive. You can drop off donations between 9 am and 6:30 pm Thursday.

All cash and check contributions will be used to purchase additional supplies and are tax deductible through local nonprofit, The South Carolina Contemporary Dance Company.

Checks can be made out and sent to:
SCCDC (Sandy Relief)
911 Lady Street, Suite H
Columbia, SC 29201

Along with community members who have a strong desire to help, the South Carolina Contemporary Dance Company, The Turning Pointe, National Recognition Products of SC and Franklin Jones/Amanda Payne Realtor Brand have teamed up to sponsor the Columbia Hurricane Sandy Relief Effort.
