NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A nonprofit group is offering South Carolinians information about how to prevent identity theft.

Family Services, Inc., is hosting a credit club event on Thursday in North Charleston.

Organizers say participants will get information about how to avoid becoming an identity theft victim and how to fix previous incidents.

Last week, Gov. Nikki Haley and state police announced that about 3.6 million state tax returns from as far back as 1998 had been hacked. This week, some experts said it may be the largest cyber-attack against a state tax department in the nation's history.

State and federal officials say vulnerability in the system has been fixed, and data will be encrypted in the future.
