Officials will never know what caused a fire that destroyed the Ragsdale Tobacco warehouse on South Church Street two weeks ago, according to Lake City Fire Chief Randy Driggers.
Diggers said they know it started in the back of the building, but the severity of the fire won't allow them to determine a cause.
The warehouse was one of the oldest buildings in the community, according to city officials.
Driggers stated that the warehouse was made of wood and it was empty inside causing the fire to spread quickly.
One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion, but was OK.
Nearly 100 firefighters from the Lake City Fire Department, Williamsburg County Fire District, Howe Springs Fire Department, Kingstree Fire Department, Olanta Fire Department, Johnsonville Fire Department, and South Lynches Fire Department helped battle the fire.
The Florence County Sheriff's Office and the Lake City Police Department helped investigate the fire.
