Myrtle Beach police arrested two people who they say set fire to an apartment and then broke in and stole things.
Police say when they got to the apartment on 44th Avenue North Tuesday morning, Matthew Donald McChesney, 34, told them he was getting ready for bed about midnight when his finance yelled that there was a fire next door. He says he got dressed, kicked down the door and sprayed down the apartment with a fire extinguisher.
His fiance, Suzette Luz Barros, 33, told police she was smoking a cigarette when she saw flames reaching the top of the window in the door next door. She said she yelled for her fiance, grabbed the community fire extinguisher and together they put the fire out, kicked in the door and put out the rest of the flames.
Police say there were multiple spots on the kitchen table and end tables where there were outlines in the fire extinguisher powder where items used to be.
An arson investigator determined the door jam and parts of the door were deliberately set on fire.
Police charged both McChesney and Barros with Burglary.
Police say they stole candles, lamps, tableware, cleaning supplies, bath towels, glasses, a blender, two area rugs, and a cooking utensil.
