(AP) -- Students and staff at The Citadel will undergo training in how to prevent child sexual abuse.

The military college announced the plan Wednesday, saying it will work with Darkness to Light, a Charleston sex abuse prevention organization.

The move comes after controversy over the college's handling of a 2007 complaint about a former Citadel camp counselor now serving 50 years in prison for molesting boys. The college has arranged for an independent investigation into how it dealt with that complaint in which it investigated but never contacted police.

The college says sex abuse prevention training will be provided to more than 3,600 people at The Citadel by next spring.

Darkness to Light was founded 12 years ago to combat child sexual abuse through awareness and prevention training programs.
