Homewood Elementary School teachers boarded a school bus with books and goody bags to deliver to their students Saturday afternoon.

"We want to make that connection," said principal Penny Foye. "To bridge that gap between home and school."

Thirty-five teachers went to the Darden Terrace community to pass out books, led by an ice cream truck. It was all free of charge to the kids and their families.

"Teaching can never be a nine-to-five job, you can't put a perimeter around doing what is best for children," said Foye.

The parents agreed.

Diamond Sanford has a kindergartner at Homewood and says she is so impressed because her teachers never did anything like this event for her when she was in school.

"I think this is really important, especially for the children. They're passing out books which people may not be able to buy for their children, so it's good," said Sanford.

Foye said this event was so successful, they are already planning more.
