Judge Baxter "Hicks" Harwell, Jr. died Sunday afternoon following an illness, according to his law firm in Florence.

Judge Harwell was a former SC Circuit Court Judge for the 12th Circuit Court from 1995 to 2005. He returned to practice law at the Finklea Law Firm in 2009.

Harwell also served in the SC House of Representatives in 1979-1980 and 1989-1995.

He was born in the Mars Bluff community of Florence in 1933.

Harwell was a recipient of South Carolina's highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto. He was honored with the Florence Distinguished Community Service Award in 1964. He was named Florence County Outstanding Young Man of the Year in 1966.
