Officials with the State Law Enforcement Division say former Howe Springs Volunteer Fire Chief Shannon Smith was arrested Friday afternoon.

SLED says he's charged with embezzlement of public funds of more than $5,000. Smith is also accused of forgery and altering a vehicle title. The specifics surrounding his charges will be detailed in a news released by SLED.

He was fired as Howe Springs chief in June following an investigating into thousands of dollars missing from the department. He served as chief since 2005.

Smith is being booked at the Florence County Detention Center where he's awaiting a bond hearing.

According to the Howe Springs Fire District website, it covers approximately 175 square miles in Florence County.

Howe Springs is dispatched to just fewer than 1000 calls a year with more than half being medical related.
