Micherald Bellamy, 39, was arrested Thursday after police say she nearly drowned her 2 year old child in the bathtub in an attempt to baptize her.

Myrtle Beach police responded to a home off White Street Thursday night just before midnight, according to a police report. A witness had called 911 after seeing the mother standing over the toddler and holding her under water for at least 2-3 seconds. Both the parent and toddler were naked, the report says.

Bellamy reportedly said she was trying to baptize the child.

The child was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for overnight observation. She was placed in protective custody pending the investigation, the police report says.

Bellamy remains in the Myrtle Beach jail. She is charged with Assault and Battery of a high and aggravated nature. Bond has not been set.
