A Coastal Carolina University student was killed Friday morning in a hit and run accident on Highway 544. The victim, Elizabeth Paola Gorshack, 18, was a freshman student from Warwick, New York.

Friday evening, Julian Delvasto, 19, was charged with Reckless Homicide, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins.

Highway Patrol says Delvasto was traveling west on Highway 544 when he hit the Gorshack near CCU's Ace University Bookstore . Police say she was crossing the street. Officials say Delvasto then fled the scene, but was found shortly after.

"Based on tips, witness accounts, Coastal Carolina University public safety was able to locate the suspect," CCU News and Information Director Martha Hunn says.

Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler said the cause of death was massive head trauma as a result of being hit. When asked if she had alcohol in her system, Fowler says there is no evidence Gorshack was at a bar or had been drinking.

Official toxicology results will take 90-120 days, he said.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the parents and family, to friends, fellow students and faculty who are learning today about the loss of Elizabeth Gorshack. We are shaken by this tragedy, and are working to provide counseling and support for all who are affected," University president David DeCenzo said.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) are investigating the accident. Collins says, they expect to release more details in a few weeks.
