A huge elm tree in downtown Conway fell across Laurel Street Thursday.
According to Conway Police Pubic Information Officer Catina Hipp, the tree was already rotting around the bottom, and all the rain we've had made it fall.
It fell across Laurel Street between 7th and 9th Avenues. It took crews several hours to cut up the tree and haul off the logs.
Conway is known for its large trees, in fact some roads are built around them.
According to former Horry County Council Chairman Liz Gilland who lives across from where the tree fell, the elm tree was about 150 years old and was "caught" by an oak that was about 50 years old. The oak tree was destroyed.
