The Myrtle Beach Police Department is reminding visitors and locals that many busy streets will become school zones in the morning and afternoons when Horry County Schools resume next week.

"They put the school zones out there for a reason, because kids-they have no concept of their surroundings. The school zone is there for everyone to slow down, so that these kids, if they do cross in front of you, you're going slow enough you can stop and not hit them," says Traffic Officer Jody Sutton.

Sutton says drivers have become accustomed to inactive school zones during the summer, and soon those roads might be filled with children walking or riding their bikes to school.

Police are asking drivers to lower their speed and use extreme caution in the school zones, and watch out for the students who will be returning. They also say to expect speeding more time in your car, because there will be more traffic with people trying to get their kids to school.

Myrtle Beach has three school zones. The speed limit changes during school drop off and pick up and is controlled by speed limit signs at the beginning and end of the zones.

The times and location of the school zones are:

  • Myrtle Beach Intermediate School is located at 34th N and Oak St.
  • School zone between 29th Ave N and 34th Ave N on Oak St.
  • School zone between 6:55a.m. to 7:55a.m. and 2:00p.m. to 3:00p.m.
