Horry County Parks and Recreation held a grand opening and dedication ceremony at the South Strand Recreation Center Thursday night.

The South Strand center is in the Burgess Community and is one of two brand new recreation centers that recently opened doors. The other is in Carolina Forest.

Both centers are 21,000 square feet and are in the process of becoming LEED certified. LEED is the industry standard for green, energy efficient buildings.

Each location comes with a gym, indoor walking track, rock climbing wall, exercise room, kitchens, locker rooms and multipurpose meeting rooms. Both recreation centers will offer after school programs once school starts next week.

The South Strand project cost more than $5 million and took more than 20 months to build.

For more information on each of these centers and the programs being offered, visit the Horry County's Parks and Recreation website.
