Richarde Daniel Carter, 41, is charged with Practicing Law Without a License and Obtaining Goods Under False Pretenses. Florence police arrested him this week after a complaint.

Major Carlos Raines says a woman met Carter at a restaurant on David McLeod Boulevard to talk about representing her boyfriend in a legal matter in June.

He told the woman he was a practicing attorney and charged her $3,000 for his legal fees, according to Raines.

The woman gave him $1,200 the same day.

Raines says the woman began to doubt if Carter was really an attorney, so she called the SC Bar Association and officials informed her he wasn't a lawyer.

Carter faces similar charges in Sumter and Virginia.

He remains at the Florence County Detention Center.
