Opening arguments got underway Monday in the trial of a Dillon County man accused of killing a married couple in 2009.

Deputies say Robert Lee Nelson, 21, killed Walter Swaner,84 and Mary Swaner, 80, in December of 2009. Investigators have not yet released how the victims died to protect the integrity of the investigation.

Their bodies were found at their home on Dixie Acres drive in Dillon County.

The state has served Nelson with a notice of intent to seek the death penalty but withdrew it after he was declared intellectually disabled, but competent to stand trial.

The trial is expected to last through the week.
