Just after 1 p.m. Friday, Mullins Police responded to a domestic call at an apartment on Gause Street involving 24-year-old Malcom Smith.

Police are not releasing the details of the call, but say when officers arrived, Smith ran and fired shots at them.

The chase continued and ended on North Mullins Street. Officers returned fire, killing Smith, according to Mullins City Administrator Kenneth Davis.

He adds an officer's patrol car was shot at least 14 times during the gunfire, but thankfully none of his officers were hurt.

About a dozen of Smith's family gathered at the scene as the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigated the deadly shooting.

Smith's family says they're devastated and want more answers as to what happened.

"I'm just speechless right now and it bothers me deeply because my nephew lays out there in the road and to me it didn't have to happen like that," said Rickey Nichols, Smith's Uncle.

Davis says he's sorry someone lost their life and situations like this are always a tragedy on either side of the law.

Davis explains he stands by the actions of Mullins police officers and believes SLED will get to the bottom of what happened and find that the officers acted professionally and properly.

An autopsy is being performed on Smith's body to determine how many times he was shot and his cause of death.
