Carroll Lynn Williams, 36, of Marion, pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court in Florence to failure to register as a sex offender, according to U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles.

Nettles said Williams was convicted on October 31, 1997, in Marlboro County, of committing a lewd act on a minor. Williams registered as a sex offender when he was released from prison and transferred his sex offender registration to Texas when he moved.

But, Nettles said, in November 2011, Williams returned to South Carolina and failed to change his registration in Texas or register in South Carolina.

Williams was arrested on February 24th by the United States Marshals Service.

The maximum penalty Williams can receive is a fine of $250,000 and/or imprisonment for ten years, and lifetime supervision.

Williams will be sentenced at a later date.
