Officials with the SC Department of Natural Resources (DNR) say they got a call that a bear was seen running on Highway 52 near Stokes Road in Florence County around 2 p.m. Monday afternoon.

DNR sent an officer to the area, but he was unable to track down the bear.

About four hours later, 911 dispatchers got more calls about a bear at Palmetto Shores subdivision off of Ebenezer Road in Darlington County. Officers went to the subdivision, but didn't see the bear.

DNR Captain Sandy Young says they believe it's the same bear because Palmetto Shores is a few miles from Highway 52, and it's possible the bear could have traveled that distance within four hours.

Wildlife officers believe the bear is a young male about two to three years old and is traveling through the area.

If you see a bear, you're advised to stay away from it and call 911.
