UPDATE: POWER RESTORED

FLORENCE -- Progress Energy says power has now been restored to the 8,579 people who lost it during a storm in Florence Monday afternoon near Freedom Boulevard and East Palmetto Street in south and west Florence.

Police said the outage affected several traffic lights on Second Loop Road, South Irby Street and Alligator Road.

Officials say a problem with a Progress Energy substation transformer caused the outages.
