COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Roberta Lockwood and Judy New manage transitional programs that help homeless female military veterans get back on their feet.

Lockwood and New are both military veterans themselves, and they say the process of helping their fellow female veterans who've hit rough patches in their lives can be a lengthy one.

They run programs in North and South Carolina that are supported by the nonprofit Lutheran Family Services and work with veterans approved by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

In many cases, that means battling things like post-traumatic stress disorder, drug addictions, abusive relationships and physical disabilities, on top of unemployment and homelessness. Lockwood and New say that the women can succeed, and that the battle takes time.
