School leaders say an elementary student was left sleeping on the school bus Wednesday evening.
The Florence One school bus driver was placed on administrative leave.
School leaders say the bus driver was operating an afterschool program route for an elementary school. When he finished his route for the day, he parked the bus at the Florence One Transportation Department on National Cemetery Road.
When the student on the bus woke up, he got off the bus and walked to the gate of the parking lot. Someone driving by saw him and called 911.
School leaders called a bus supervisor who lives near the facility to open the gate.
"This is an extremely unfortunate incident, and our hearts and concerns are with the parents of this student. We are glad he was found safe and unharmed, and we will do what we can to ensure that he receives the care and counseling that he may need as a result of this occurrence," Florence One Superintendent Dr. Allie Brooks said in a press release.
The Florence One Transportation Department says it scheduled a full review of safety procedures with school bus drivers to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.
