CONWAY -- An arraignment hearing was held Monday morning for a Coastal Carolina University basketball player who was arrested over the weekend. .
Christopher Joseph Gradnigo, 22, was booked at J. Reuben Long Detention Center Sunday on Assault & Battery, Kidnapping and Burglary.
The police report says Gradnigo went into the common area of an apartment at University Place and started beating on a woman's bedroom door. The report says the woman opened the door to ask Gradnigo to leave and he pinned her down on the bed, hit her and tried to choke her.
The woman told police she threatened to activate the panic button in her bedroom and Gradnigo left.
Gradnigo was arraigned in Conway Municipal Court at 9 a.m. Monday, according to Conway Police Lt. Rodney Sessions. Because of the nature of Gradnigo's charge, he will have to appear before a Circuit Court judge for a bond hearing. Until then, Gradnigo will continue to be held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center, Sessions said.
The college released this statement Monday afternoon:
"In accordance with the official policies and procedures of Coastal Carolina University, Christopher Gradnigo is not allowed on campus pending completion of the University's judicial process. The Office of Student Conduct is reviewing the case.
According to CCU Director of Athletics Hunter Yurachek, Gradnigo has been suspended from all team-related activities. His status as a member of the men's basketball program will be decided after the university's judicial process has reached a resolution."
