Hundreds of St. Andrew Catholic School students walked several miles on the beach Friday morning in an effort to 'Stamp Out Hunger'.

"All week long, we've been collecting money for the community kitchen and in order to demonstrate solidarity with the poor in our area, we're taking this walk today," St. Andrew Principal Molly Halasz said.

More than 7,000 Catholic schools across the nation spent the week celebrating faith, academics and service. Friday's walk, which was St. Andrew's service project, started at 38th Avenue North. The students then trekked a mile and a half on the Myrtle Beach sand, before turning around to go back to the school.

"Jesus has asked us to help others and he's asked us to feed the poor and we can do that by providing money to an excellent organization which is the Myrtle Beach Community Kitchen," Halasz added.

The kitchen serves hundreds of meals each day to those who would otherwise go without food.

"The volunteers do a wonderful job and we want to support them in that ministry," Halasz said.
