The city of North Myrtle Beach will take public comment on first reading of a possible smoking ban Monday night.

The ban will make smoking illegal in government buildings, restaurants and other public places.

More than 40 South Carolina cities and counties now have some sort of ban on indoor smoking.

Smoking in public parks would be limited to certain areas.

The group Smoke Free Horry says North Myrtle Beach and Myrtle Beach are the only two major coastal resort cities in the southeast without a smoking ban.

The town of Surfside Beach passed an indoor smoking ban in 2007. Atlantic Beach passed a ban this year.

Monday's meeting starts at 7 p.m.
