Black Water Middle School kicked off its Power of Words program Friday with an assembly for all students.
The concept of the POW program is not only to get children to stop and think about the words they say, but also the words they use in text messages and through social media.
Principal Cindy Thibodeau formed a committee to come up with a powerful approach to teach the students about bullying.
Thibodeau says the idea came to her through a parent wanting information on cyber bullying. The school educates students on character monthly and this was another issue they wanted to address. She says this issue will be at the forefront and something that needs to be worked on daily.
Henry Poston, a sixth grader at Black Water Middle School, says the program teaches that "words can be very powerful and it's good if you use them in a good way to really lift up people, but words that you think might not hurt people that badly can really crush them."
Former CCU head coach David Bennett and Senior safety Marcus Lott were featured speakers at the assembly.
