CONWAY -- In a decision that was not entirely unexpected, Horry County is going to be looking for a new administrator.
As the Horry County Council meeting got underway Tuesday night, members voted 10 to 2 to release John Weaver from his contract five months early.
After the vote, Weaver spoke to the crowd gathered for the meeting.
Weaver has been with the county for 11 years. Prior to being county administrator, he served as county attorney for nine years. As administrator, he was responsible for managing 1,700 employees in more than 30 departments who take care of the day-to-day operations of services.
"Politics is a volatile business," Weaver said. He added, "to the citizens of Horry County, I have never done anything without their interest."
After Weaver spoke, he was given a standing ovation by the council members and the audience. County Council Chairman Tom Rice thanked Weaver for his service.
Steve Gosnell has been named the interim county administrator. Prior to this appointment he was the assistant county administrator. Gosnell will get a $7500 pay raise for the promotion that will at this time, last six months, according to Rice. Weaver will retain his salary until his contract is up. Tuesday, he said, was his last day at work.
