Of all those oysters eaten on the Grand Strand, many of the shells are being put to good use.

The Department of Natural Resources is making it even easier for people to recycle the shells by opening a new oyster shell recycling site off of 21st Avenue North in Myrtle Beach Thursday.

All you have to do is dump your shells on the ground in the on-site receptacle.

DNR will put the shells back in the water, giving oyster larvae something to cling to so they can grow their own new shells.

Ben Dyar, with DNR Fisheries Management, says the benefits go way beyond giving oysters a place to grow. "Not only do they help curb erosion by creating natural breakwaters, they can filter the water to make it cleaner. They also act as an extremely great habitat for many species including red drum, flounder and blue crabs."

They Oyster Shell Recycling Program has set up 24 oyster shell drop off sites along the coast.

This is the 8th one in Horry and Georgetown counties.
