Bennettsville police say they are investigating the death of Edna Trinity Hunt, 3, after responding to a call about her death Thursday night at Marlboro Park Hospital.
Police say Edna was brought to the emergency room by her mother for an apparent cardiac arrest due to seizures. Doctors told police after examining the child's body, they discovered she'd been abused for some time. They say Edna's body was bruised, and she had burns to her buttocks and vaginal area.
Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown says an autopsy was performed on the child at the Medical University of South Carolina Saturday to determine an exact cause of death.
Police say after reviewing the preliminary results the charges have been upgraded from unlawful neglect towards a child.
Edna's mother, Atelia Hunt, 25, of Pershing Street in Bennettsville, is charged with homicide by child abuse.
Hunt's boyfriend, Mike Huckabee Jr, 29, is also charged with homicde by child abuse.
Both are being held at the Marlboro County Detention Center.
