Homeless vets won't have to leave Charleston base

(AP) -- Some homeless military veterans will not have to leave the old Charleston Naval Base. All of the veterans were told last month they would have to leave the base when the new owners came in to renovate.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported two Charleston area lawmakers helped work  out a lease that allows the Chesapeake Health Education Program to remain at the base.

The group had planned to move its veterans housing because it could not reach an agreement with South Carolina Public Railways, which had bought the base property at a foreclosure sale last year.

The agreement allows Chesapeake to continue to lease several duplexes at no cost for at least three more years, as long as the group pays for insurance and maintenance.

The decision gives the veterans a quieter, more park-like setting and a quicker commute to treatment at the Veterans Affairs health center in Charleston.
