Horry County Police are investigating the death of a 3-year-old was pronounced dead at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

Police were called to 181 E.V. Road in the Red Bluff area of Loris at 8:15 a.m. Saturday.

Officials say a 911 caller reported a 3-year-old child had shot himself and his condition was very serious.

"The investigation so far revealed that the child was inside a vehicle, with his mother and her boyfriend nearby, when he found a pistol which was inadvertently left there," said Lt. Raul Denis.

Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler saids the child is Everett Tanner Avant. He suffered a single gun shot wound to the head area. An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday morning.

It's not known at this time if anyone will face criminal charges related to the incident.
